Seagulls went to the South West Age Group Championships over the last two weekends with 11 representatives. We came away with 3 medals in total, a Silver and two Bronze. Added in some very close to the podium finishes too, with five 4th place positions and two 5th’s. An excellent display from the team as a whole.

mighty-max ? ‘Mighty’ Max Weeks
In the 14 year old age group, Max concentrated specifically on his short distance splash and dash events. With four events in total, he came away with a Silver medal in the 50m Butterfly dropping over half a second from heat to final finishing in 27.80. ‘Mighty’ Max in the 100’s finished in 4th place for both the 100m Butterfly and Freestyle, again improving from heats to finals in both events. In the Butterfly from 1.04.95 to 1.03.35. Freestyle a heat swim of 58.66 and dropping another 0.41 to finish in 58.25. His final event of the two weekends the 50m Freestyle just outside his best but again improving from heat to final by 0.23 finishing 5th in 26.63. Well done Max.

100 Miles ? Ward
Miles ? Ward entered a total of 8 events over the two weekends, coming with long course personal best swims and beating his short course conversions in all but 3 events, a smashing record. Miles for his efforts came away with a Bronze medal in the 400m Individual Medley in a time of 5.25.29. He came agonisingly close to more podium finishes in his freestyle events. 1500m 18.20.94 4th 25 second pb, 400m 4.40.06 4th 10 second pb and 200m 2.14.05 4th stepping up a second from the heat to final. Master Ward also made the final in the 200m Butterfly. Swimming a 10 second long course personal best in the heat and dropping another 2 seconds in the final to come 5th in a time of 2.32.22.

insane ? ‘Insane’ Isaac Ellis
Isaac qualified for every Regional event bar one. He took on 13 events over the 2 weekends, like team mates, Max and Miles, Isaac came home with a medal for his efforts in the 100m Butterfly. A two second long course personal best in the heat putting him in second place into the final. Isaac dropped over a second and won Bronze in 1.14.34. The 50m Butterfly Ellis swam 2 more personal bests, in the heat 32.88 and dropped another 0.58 in the final coming in 4th 32.30. With a whole array of long course personal bests, ‘Insane’ managed to make 3 more finals over the two weekends. 200m Individual Medley 2.46.70, 100m Freestyle 1.07.67 and the 200m freestyle 2.28.15. Great job Isaac.

? ‘Wicked’ Kai Weeks
‘Wicked’ Weeks qualified in multiply events, and swam 10 over the two weekends. A huge personal best in the 1500m, knocking 25 seconds off in 19.23.89 coming in 9th overall. In the shorter 400m freestyle event Kai with another personal best in 4.50.66 landing him in 10th place in the 13’s. Kai took another chunk out of his 200m Freestyle in 2.18.15 where he come in 11th position.

? ‘Magic’ Emily McWilliam
‘Magic’ Emily McWilliam swam in the younger band of the 11/12 age group. Her first event being the 100m Backstroke with a long course personal best in 1.24.29 coming in 54th overall and 7th in the 11’s. In the 50m Freestyle McWilliam beat her short course conversion in a time of 32.73 coming in 42nd overall and 2nd in the 11’s, awesome job, see you there next year!!!

big-monster ? ‘Big’ Sam Small
Sam only being with Seagulls a number of months has gone from strength to strength, qualifying for 5 events in total. He ‘only’ came away with personal bests in all events he swum. His highest positional finish was in the 100m Backstroke, going under his short course conversion by 3 seconds 1.15.03, and coming 14th overall. Sam also broke the 30 second barrier in the 50m Freestyle for the first time, from an entry time of 31.30 to 29.61. Superb from the Seagull Sam!

? James ‘Richie’ Richardson
James qualified for all the Breaststroke events with some big long course personal bests, in the 50m swimming a 37.82 and in the 100m 1.21.61 not far off matching his short course best, that swim landed him in 19th overall in the 14 years age group. Super Job James!

lightning‘Lightning’ Lawrence Elliott
Lightning Lawrence just had the one event over the 2 weekends. He qualified in the 100m Breaststroke where he managed to beat his short course conversion time by nearly a second swimming 1.35.84. Putting him in 31st in the whole of the South West Region, again like team mate Ed in the younger band of the 11/12’s.

dynamite ? ‘Dynamite’ Dan Staples
‘Dynamite’ Dan qualified for the 100m Freestyle, beating his short course conversion time coming in 19th in the 12 year old boys, he went 1.11.18. Again, a good platform to build from for next year.

torpedo ? Poppy Cordell-‘Torpedo’-Thompson
In Poppy’s first Regionals she came away with some great experience, beating 2 out of 3 short course conversion times too. 50m Backstroke 37.42, 50m Butterfly 37.24 and a long course pb in the 50m Freestyle in a time of 33.42. Her best overall placing was 31st in the 50m Backstroke. Fantastic start to build on for next year.

ed-ex? Ed ‘Express’ Jaszek
The Ed ‘Express’ qualified in two of the Breaststroke events the 50m & 100m getting some valuable long course experience at a high level competition. His first Regionals getting in the 11/12 age group being the younger of the two age groups.
