Seagulls took a small flock of Seagulls down to the ASA South West Youth Regional Championships held at the Plymouth Life Centre between 29th, 30th April and 1st May 2017.

James ‘Rapid’ Richardson
Last year at the South West Age Group Regional Championships James only qualified for two of the three Breaststroke events. He has worked hard and built a cohort of events for the Youth Championships, qualifying for a total of 8 events. Not only did James qualify but he came away from his first Youth Championships and first time to the Plymouth Life centre with two medals and four long course personal best swims. His first medal topped off a strong day for Seagulls, in the last male event of the day Richardson stepped up to the mark beating rival 15 year old’s in later heats by a few seconds, finishing in a time of 4:31.93 earning him a Bronze medal. In James other heat declared winning event he went one better swimming his way over 30 lengths in the long course pool to a Silver medal, 17:53.95 in the very last event of the three day meet. He also swam life time bests in all his freestyle events. Very well done James.

Jacob ‘OTT’ O’Hara
Jacobs outstanding event of the weekend was his 400m individual medley where he took 4 seconds off his previous best to swim a 5:09.68 landing him in 6th place overall in the Region, the strongest region in the country with swimming giants such as Millfield and Plymouth. His next highest finish in the competition was in the 15 years 200m Backstroke; he swam a 3 second personal best in the heat and qualified for the final from 1st reserve. In the final he managed to hold his heat time and gain 4 places to finish 7th overall. In the 100m Butterfly Jacob took off a solid second to swim a 1:08.64 finishing in 21st overall. Like the previous event O’Hara did the same in the Backstroke swimming over a second faster than his previous, 100m Backstroke in 1.08.29. Jacob only just missed out on the 200m Butterfly final finishing in 12th with a second pb 2:35.95.

Abi Richardson
Abi qualified for three events and swimming to two personal best out of the three swims. Dropping into the 33’s in the 50m Backstroke coming in 27th position in the Girls 17/over age group 33.76. She also sliced off just over half a second on her 100m Freestyle finishing in 29th in a time of 1:03.33. Richardson’s third swim she was just outside her best by 0.06 in the 50m Freestyle.

Taylor ‘Swift’ Eeles
Taylor in the 16 year age group had two swims, with a personal best in the Butterfly splash and dash, breaking the 30 second barrier in 29.33 finishing 23rd overall. He was only 0.15 outside his best in the 50m Freestyle coming in 29th place. Well done.

Maisie Gormley
Maisie swam in two events on the Sunday of the three day Regional meet. She had a strong swim and was only just over a second off her lifetime best in the 100m Backstroke coming in 19th in the 17/over women’s bracket. In her second event Maisie finished in 33rd position in the freestyle sprint event, 29.32 .42 outside her lifetime best.

‘Mighty’ Max Weeks
Max was outside his personal best swims in the two events he swam here in Plymouth. Max came 15th in the 50m Butterfly in a time of 28.52 and 19th overall in the 100m Freestyle 58.83.
